We visited Max Canine a few days ago for a 1-2-1 assessment with Emily. Our dog is nearly 5 years of age and suffers from anxiety when first meeting other dogs and strangers. She was a ‘lockdown’ puppy and we did not get the opportunity to socialise her. We were very impressed with the way Emily understood our concerns and the excellent advice and tips we received which are already having a positive effect on our dog when going for walks. We now plan to participate in future group training sessions at Max Canine and would highly recommend Emily.
We approached Emily after a friend recommendation and we were not disappointed. As first time dog owners to a lovely staffy, we did need some guidance to start off at the right foot. If you have a puppy and just want to start things right before developing any/too many issues Emily's help is so valuable. We have had a 1:1 session and attended a lot of the socialisation groups last summer which helped so much. Everything we've learnt we have continuously put into practice and we now have a lovely 2 yr old happy dog that we can take anywhere with us, even a successful holiday to France walking the busy streets of Bordeaux with the most calm and happy boy. To add to that, the confidence you gave me with off lead walking was massive and we enjoy off lead walks daily and I have peace of mind with our dogs recall being brilliant. Thank you! 10000% recommend - worth the time, trust and money (very reasonably priced too). Definitely worth it and your dog will thank you❤️
After struggling with DIY/online training with our very fearful, Romanian rescue, Finlay, we saw Max Canine on Facebook and thought it was time to see a proper behaviourist and the reviews helped us to decide on Max Canine. Emily's set-up in Carrog was ideal for the one-to-one assessment session. The session was great. Emily is really friendly and clearly knows what she's doing with anxious dogs, and explained the psychology really well. We covered basic tweaks like how we hold the lead and control the pace on walks to help Finlay ignore his triggers. Finlay's biggest fear is bicycles on walks - but by the end of the session, Finlay was completely ignoring Emily's bike and just admiring the nearby sheep. We've got a long way to go with Finlay but from taking on Emily's advice, we're noticing improvements already after just two days. We're looking forward to working with Emily and her team going forward!
Highly recommend Emily and Max Canine. My 16 month old dog has responded so well to the advice given by Emily having completed a 1-2-1 session. Focused around what I want for my dog, recall and reduced reactivity, Emily has been able to give some brilliant training to build on. He has already shown such a brilliant improvement after one session which gave me the confidence to take him along to a group session which was great.
I cannot recommend Emily enough. Ori is a collie cross from Croatia. I had been told by multiple trainers he was never able to go off lead and his prey drive had been ‘activated’ and wouldn’t get better. I put him in residential training for around 9 days as his main issue was chasing sheep. ALWAYS chasing sheep. I was kept up to date sent pics and vids showing him to me and what was being taught etc so felt super at ease. Not only that day 2 she was sat with Ori in a field off lead surrounded by sheep. She explained his main focus being around our relationship and took time to show me and explain why and how things work. Absolutely amazing! and Ori is so much more settled as a dog. Listens more and I understand him more. Our walks are more relaxed and I’m no longer terrified of seeing a sheep or anything that moves on a walk. Recommend!!!!
Park Rd, Coedpoeth, Wrexham LL11 3TD
Friendly, well organised and calm class, lots of information, on line stuff to access, trainers on hand, other activities organised 😊
We have used Puppy School, Coedpoeth for training sessions with our previous two puppies. Karen and the team are very knowledgeable and we found the classes and socialisation to be of great help in the essential training of our dogs at this young age.
Karen is very knowledgeable in her field of training puppies through to adults, as we as a family have experienced both age classes. The team were excellent, easy to talk to about any concerns..I would highly recommend 👌
Stan attended puppy school in coedpoeth, and despite his constant barking and over excitement, the trainers did a fantastic job with him and us, 18 months later what we all learned is still in use and going well

Finding qualified dog trainers in Chirk means connecting with professionals who understand the unique character of this historic Welsh border town. Whether you're training a working sheepdog for the surrounding farmland, managing a reactive rescue near Chirk Castle, or socialising a puppy for walks along the Llangollen Canal, our experienced trainers deliver tailored obedience classes, behaviour modification, and puppy training programmes suited to rural and semi-rural living.
Serving Chirk, Pontfadog, Glyn Ceiriog, and surrounding Wrexham villages, we've successfully trained over 850 dogs in the past eight years. Our approach addresses the specific needs of dog ownership in this area, from livestock awareness training to reliable recall in the beautiful Ceiriog Valley countryside.
Chirk presents distinct training requirements shaped by its position straddling the Wales-England border and surrounded by working farmland. Dogs here encounter sheep, cattle, horses, and wildlife regularly, making livestock training and solid recall absolutely essential. The town's proximity to Chirk Castle estate, the Offa's Dyke Path, and numerous public footpaths means your dog needs excellent off-lead control and public manners.
Our trainers specialise in rural dog training challenges including livestock desensitisation, managing prey drive around rabbits and deer, and building confidence in dogs nervous of farm machinery or gunshots. We understand local requirements for dogs in agricultural communities where responsible ownership and stock-proofing can prevent serious incidents and maintain good relationships with farmers and landowners.
Our puppy programmes focus on early socialisation to Chirk's rural environment, including safe exposure to livestock, farm sounds, canal boats, and the diverse wildlife found in local woodlands. Training covers recall fundamentals, lead walking on country lanes, and building confidence around tractors and agricultural equipment while establishing crucial obedience foundations.
We specialise in teaching dogs to ignore livestock completely, essential for safe walks across the numerous public footpaths crossing farmland around Chirk. Using positive reinforcement, we build bombproof recall even with sheep visible in adjacent fields, ensuring your dog can enjoy countryside access responsibly without risking livestock welfare or facing potential legal consequences.
Our behaviour programmes address reactivity issues that often emerge or worsen in quieter rural settings, including lead reactivity on narrow canal towpaths, fear-based responses to farm animals or machinery, and managing high prey drive around wildlife. Progressive desensitisation helps dogs develop calm responses to triggers encountered throughout the Chirk area.
Dog training in Chirk typically costs £35-60 per hour for private sessions, with 6-week puppy courses averaging £140-220. Specialist livestock training or behaviour consultations range from £50-85. Many trainers offer home visits throughout Chirk and surrounding villages at no additional travel cost, making professional training accessible and convenient for rural residents.
Yes, livestock training is crucial in Chirk given the prevalence of sheep and cattle farming throughout the area. Dogs chasing livestock can cause serious harm, result in dogs being legally destroyed, and lead to substantial financial penalties. Professional training ensures your dog ignores livestock completely, allowing safe enjoyment of public footpaths while protecting both your dog and local farming interests.
Chirk offers excellent training environments including the Llangollen Canal towpath for lead work and distraction training, Chirk Castle grounds when open to dogs, and various public footpaths for rural recall practice. The quieter lanes around Pontfadog and Glyn Ceiriog provide controlled environments for early training, while busier areas near the town centre help proof behaviours against increased activity.
Professional dog training in Chirk creates well-mannered, reliable companions suited to this beautiful rural area. Our specialised approach combines countryside-specific skills with proven obedience techniques, ensuring your dog thrives whether exploring castle grounds, walking canal paths, or navigating working farmland. Contact us today to schedule your consultation and develop a training programme perfectly matched to life in Chirk and the surrounding Welsh borderlands.
